Cemetery Guide

Cemetery Compliance Guide

Cemetery Regulations

Double headstones present specific regulatory considerations beyond those governing single monuments. Cemetery plot dimensions in New Jersey are fixed, and institutions typically set maximum monument widths that reflect those dimensions. A double headstone designed without confirming the cemetery's width limit may need to be redesigned — a delay and expense easily avoided. Companion Stone Shop contacts the monument office of every receiving cemetery before production begins, confirming the maximum permitted width, required base dimensions, and any restrictions on monument height relative to width. These specifications are built into your stone's design from the first drawing.

Foundation Requirements

Double headstones require wider concrete foundations than single monuments — footings that support the full base uniformly, preventing settling or tilting at any point. Our installation crew pours foundations to the cemetery's specified dimensions and depth, allows appropriate cure time, and then sets the finished stone using mechanical equipment. Leveling a double headstone requires particular care: any twist along the wider base is visible, and we verify plumb and level across the full width before releasing the stone.

Religious Cemetery Considerations

Faith-based cemeteries in Morris County, Bergen County, and throughout New Jersey often have policies specific to pre-planning double headstones — situations where one partner has passed and the surviving partner's panel is being prepared in advance. Some institutions require that pre-planned panels be finished with only a portion of the final information; others allow full preparation with the date panel left open. Companion Stone Shop is familiar with these conventions and advises families on the appropriate approach for each specific cemetery before design begins.

Companion / Double Headstone

A double headstone — also known as a companion headstone — is a granite monument designed to carry the memorial inscriptions of two individuals, typically a married couple, on a shared base. At Companion Stone Shop, double headstones are produced in three principal formats: the single wide die, the paired upright configuration, and the companion flat marker. The single wide die is the most unified form — one piece of granite carrying both inscriptions, separated by a central design element such as a heart, a cross, or a polished dividing panel. The paired upright format uses two matching single-width uprights set on a continuous base, each carrying one person's full inscription; this format provides more vertical surface area per panel and suits plots where width is constrained. The companion flat marker is used in lawn-section cemeteries that require flush-mounted memorials and is available as a single wide flat stone or two coordinated flat stones set side by side. All three formats are available in upright, slant, and flat configurations as appropriate to the cemetery's requirements, and all are produced from American-made granite to cemetery-compliant specifications confirmed before production begins.

Granite Options

Granite selection for a double headstone requires consideration of how the material will look across a wider surface — where natural color variation and crystalline pattern are more visible than on a narrower single stone. India Black granite is the most uniform option: its very consistent dark surface means both panels of a double headstone read as one continuous background, making the unified composition particularly coherent. Mountain Gray granite, with its characteristic salt-and-pepper crystal variation, produces a surface with subtle organic texture that some families find more personal. Dakota Mahogany, warm and reddish-brown, carries a sense of welcome that complements the relational meaning of a double headstone. All three options are available for comparison at our Morris County showroom as sample slabs.

Custom Design Process

Designing a double headstone at Companion Stone Shop begins with understanding the relationship the monument will represent. During the consultation — conducted in English, Russian, or Polish at our Morris County showroom or by telephone — we discuss both individuals, the story of their shared life, and any symbols or imagery that carries meaning for the family. When one partner has predeceased the other, we also discuss how to handle the pre-planning aspects sensitively and in accordance with the cemetery's policies. Our design team produces a scaled drawing showing both panels, the central design element, and all carved components. You review and approve this drawing before any production step begins.

Our Process

Our Hand-Carving Process

Producing a double headstone at Companion Stone Shop follows the same six-stage process as all our monuments, with particular thoroughness at the design stage. Stage one: the consultation, where we gather all relevant details — both individuals' names and dates, the cemetery's location and regulations, the stone color and format preference, any central design element, and pre-planning considerations. Stage two: the scaled design drawing, presented to you for review and approval before any production expense is incurred. Stage three: American-made granite selection and preparation — wider companion slabs are inspected for surface uniformity across their full width. Stage four: hand-carving — each panel's lettering, the central design element, borders, and symbols are carved in sequence by our artisans. Stage five: finishing — letter fills, polish, and inspection against the drawing. Stage six: delivery to the cemetery, wide-footprint foundation preparation by our crew, installation and leveling of the finished monument, and the installation photograph sent to your family.

What Families Say

New Jersey families have entrusted us with their memorials for three generations.

“My parents were inseparable in life and it was important to us that they be represented together on one stone. Companion Stone Shop understood exactly what we meant and produced a double headstone with their names framing a small scene of the lake where they spent their summers. It is exactly right.” — Kevin, Sussex County NJ
Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

If you do not see your question here, call us.

How long does it take to design and install a headstones?

Double headstones follow the same general production timeline as single monuments — eight to twelve weeks from design approval to installation. The design phase may be slightly more involved given the dual-panel composition, but production time is comparable.

Do you serve cemeteries throughout New Jersey?

Yes. We place double headstones in cemeteries across all 14 New Jersey counties. Our installation crews are experienced with the wider foundations and leveling requirements specific to companion monuments.

Are your memorials cemetery-compliant?

Yes. Every double headstone is designed to meet the specific regulations of the receiving cemetery, including maximum width limits and pre-planning panel policies. We confirm these before production begins.

Can I bring my own design or photo?

Yes. Photographs, shared symbols, religious imagery, and scenes from the couple's life can all be incorporated into the central design element or individual panels. Our design team produces a scaled drawing for your approval before carving begins.

Do you offer veteran companion markers?

Yes. Double veteran headstones — incorporating military information for a veteran alongside a spouse's standard inscription — are among our most meaningful commissions. We are familiar with VA burial programs and can advise on coordination with government-furnished markers.

What languages do you serve families in?

Yes — English, Russian, and Polish.
